French Rhythm - Le Rythme

Youve probably noticed, or at least heard others say, that the French language is very musical. The reason for this is that in French there are no stress marks on words: all syllables are pronounced at the same intensity (volume). In addition, many final consonants are liaised or enchaà ®nà ©s onto the next word. The lack of stress marks combined with liaisons and enchaà ®nements are what give French its rhythm: all of the words flow together like music. In contrast, English words each have a stressed syllable, which makes English sound comparatively choppy or staccato. (This is purely from a linguistic point of view, not a judgment about which language sounds prettier.) Instead of stressed and unstressed syllables, French sentences are divided into rhythmic groups (groupes rythmiques or mots phonà ©tiques). A rhythmic group is a group of syntactically-related words in a sentence.* There are three basic kinds: Nominal (noun) groupsVerbal groupsPrepositional groups *Note that since the individual words within rhythmic groups are syntactically related, they are usually subject to required liaisons. The last syllable of each rhythmic group is accentuated in two ways. Intonation   Intonation refers to the pitch of someones voice. The last syllable of each rhythmic group inside the sentence is pronounced at a higher pitch than the rest of the sentence, while the final rhythmic groups final syllable is pronounced at a lower pitch. The only exceptions to this are  questions: in this case, the last rhythmic groups final syllable is also at a high pitch. Tonic Accent The French tonic accent is a slight elongation of the final syllable in each rhythmic group. Rhythmic groups normally have up to 7 syllables, but this varies according to how quickly they are being spoken. If a sentence is spoken very quickly, some of the shorter rhythmic groups may be joined together. For example, Allez-vous au thà ©Ãƒ ¢tre? is short enough that you might choose to pronounce it as a single rhythmic group rather than Allez-vous  | au thà ©Ãƒ ¢tre? The following chart shows how rhythmic groups fit together. Click on the Listen links to hear each sentence pronounced at two different speeds. Due to the (lack of) quality of internet sound, we exaggerated the accentuation in the slow version. Please remember that this is just a guide to help you better understand rhythm and improve your French listening and speaking skills.   Nominal group Verbal group Prepositional Listen David et Luc | veulent vivre | au Mexique. slow normal Mon mari Étienne | est prof d'anglais | à   Casablanca. slow normal Un à ©tudiant | est arrivà ©. slow normal Nous parlons | d'un film. slow normal Allez-vous | au thà ©Ãƒ ¢tre ? slow normal

The Most Intelligence Person I Know Free Essays

My friend Alejandra is the most intelligent person I know. Griselda Vasquez English 115 Professor Stagnaro 10/3/2012 What is intelligence? According to David Wechsel, â€Å"Intelligence is the aggregate or global capacity of the individual to act purposefully, to think rationally and to deal effectively with his environment†. Human intelligence is the capacity that a human has to adapt successfully to the world. We will write a custom essay sample on The Most Intelligence Person I Know or any similar topic only for you Order Now I define Intelligence as the ability of humans to achieve objectives in life. The most intelligent person I know is my best girlfriend Alejandra because she is so creative; she is a good problem solver, and she is responsible. My best friend Alejandra is so creative in the way that she always has something new to show to other people. She does original and unexpected things, though sometimes she expresses in them an uncommon way. She always surprises me in different ways; for example, my last birthday, she organized a big theme party for me. Ale made all guests dress in red and she made beautiful decorations for the tables; she decorates a dry branch with necklaces and rhinestones hung on it. My friend also did cute cupcakes and cookies with the shape of the peace and love symbol. Ale has a lot of imagination and she is able to create things that some people cannot imagine; for example, my friend can do beautiful things with just a paper or other recycled material that have on her hands. She makes all kinds of flowers of any size with crepe paper. Furthermore, she can make bags, belts and bracelets with bottle caps, plastic or cans. Alejandra has the ability to take advantage of any situation or thing that she develops. She always relates her ideas to something that can have a benefit in her life; an example is when she wants something and for some reason does not have enough money to buy it, she uses her creativity and makes key chains or bracelets to sell and thus get money to achieve her goal of having that thing. Besides doing everything in detail until bring it to be perfect or near perfect. Her creativity is amazing. My friend Alejandra has a great ability to solve problems. She has the capacity to solve math and life problems. Ale never sees the problems as something unacceptable in her life; on the contrary, she sees problems as a normal part of life. She always says that if in life there are no obstacles or problems, then it’s not life. She thinks that problems always can be solved and none is too big to not be resolved. She always looks at the way that her problems are solved, learns from them, and improves the idea. She is a good problem solver because she needs to work and study at same time, she doesn’t have the support of her parents and in spite for that, she knows how to get ahead and pay her rent, school, phone bill, and everything she needs to survive. Also, she helps other people solve their problems by giving advice and support. When I have a problem, she always gives me her support and helps me to feel better. Moreover Alejandra has the capacity to solve math problems quickly. A good example of this is when we were in high school she never cared about studying for math tests, she was always the first to finish the exams, and she also was the one who always had the best score on test of the whole group. She is so smart in this area for that she is going to graduate with honors in accounting. My friend is the most responsible person I know, both into thoughts and actions. She is very responsible when it comes work and school. She always does her work on time and puts all her effort in, no matter whether she likes or does not like it. Ale always arrives on time to every class, appointment, or job she has; for example when she had the interview for her current job. She arrived fifteen minutes before her appointment time. My friend is a responsible person when making decisions and accepts the consequences of her actions. When she does something wrong and she knows it, she is aware of her actions and assumes the consequences of it even if it costs some work. Last year she had to make a hard decision in her life. She had to decide between staying in Tijuana or move to San Luis Potosi with her parents. She decided stay in Tijuana and take the responsibility to charge her life by herself without any help. Also, she was responsible when she had to take care of her siblings. Before her parents left Tijuana, they had seafood restaurants and her responsibility was to take care of her family business. She goes in it on time and does her best. She learns what she doesn’t already know to benefit the business, and other employees, and customers. She leaves when her work is done, not sneaking out early or slang off and leaving work for others to do. She picks up after herself at home, pays her bills on time, she doesn’t go into debt, she doesn’t make promises she can’t keep, and she doesn’t stand people up when she promises to be there. She keeps her word to others and to herself. She reaches out a helping hand and asks for help when she needs it. She takes care of her health. These qualities have my friend as being creative, solving problems easily, and being responsible causes and she is the smartest person I know because she knows how to lead her life to success and achieve all her goals successfully. Taoism Essay Research Paper Taoism applied to free essay sample

Taoism Essay, Research Paper Taoism applied to mundane life # 8220 ; Practice not-doing and everything will fall into topographic point # 8221 ; . In Taoism this is the construct known as # 8220 ; wu wei # 8221 ; . Wu Wei is the pattern of making and not-doing. This construct comes from the theory of the Yin and Yang. The Yang, along with Wei, is the pattern of making. The Yin, along with Wu Wei, is the pattern of not-doing. One compliments the other, and each can non be entirely. The Tao tells people to pattern not-doing because it will convey felicity in their life. By not-doing, the Tao means non performing actions, which are unneeded and uncalled for. Peoples should merely take things as they come in life and they will populate a life full of felicity and pleasance. If you don # 8217 ; t interfere with the Tao and allow things take their natural class, everything will work out in your life. We will write a custom essay sample on Taoism Essay Research Paper Taoism applied to or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page # 8220 ; If powerful work forces and adult females could stay centered in the Tao all people would be at peace If you work against your Tao, you will neer happen felicity. The Sage patterns wu Wei. He teaches without words and performs without actions. He knows and hence does non talk. Many people mistake conceptual cognition for the map to the district. The Sage is our map to the Tao. He points his finger to demo us the manner, but does non truly state us what to make and how to pattern Taoism. Lao Tzu # 8217 ; s constructs of the Tao can be a usher to rational life. If one follows these beliefs he is guaranteed felicity in his life. However, it is really hard to follow the Tao, even though the instructions are said to be easy understood and easy put into pattern. The ground the Tao is so hard to hold on is because you can non cognize that you are practising it. The Tao is beyond all words. If you give it words, it does non be. It is unnamable. If you concentrate on the Tao, you will neer understand it. You can non believe about it, you must merely make it. This is really hard because people ever think about what they do, but this does non work with the Tao. You can non look for the Tao ; you can non listen for the Tao. You must merely accept the thought that it is ever at that place, omnipresent, and you can # 8217 ; t see it. This is all really of import because if one can non understand these first simple stairss in Taoism, they will be lost the remainder of the manner. In personal life, you should neer specify yourself. When you define yourself, you are really seting bounds on yourself. If a adult male defines himself as a physician, he is restricting himself to science. If a adult male defines himself as a vocalist, he is restricting himself to music. By restricting yourself, you are non leting yourself to see life to the full. Besides, you should neer specify any object because they will ever hold an antonym. If you define something as # 8220 ; good # 8221 ; so its antonym is defined as # 8220 ; bad # 8221 ; , when in world it might non be. When a adult male is about to purchase a auto, he will desire to purchase a company with a # 8220 ; good name # 8221 ; . He has defined one auto as # 8220 ; good # 8221 ; and the remainder are # 8220 ; bad # 8221 ; . When he realizes he can non afford the # 8220 ; good # 8221 ; auto he is unhappy. He has to purchase a # 8220 ; bad # 8221 ; auto. While driving his # 8220 ; bad # 8221 ; auto, he thinks about what people will state. He worries that they will non O.K. of his new purchase. If the adult male had non originally set such high outlooks of purchasing a # 8220 ; good # 8221 ; auto, he would non be upset with his state of affairs. By caring about other people # 8217 ; s blessing he becomes their # 8220 ; prisoner # 8221 ; . If you see things as they are, so you will be happy with whatever you have. If you see things through other’s eyes then you will never achieve the high goals you are setting. â€Å"In family life, be completely present†. All family members should always be there for each other. You should be completely present for the rest of your family, this way other members can talk to you whenever necessary. This gives a sense of security to the rest of the family. Parents should always be there for their children, children should always be there for their parents, and siblings should always be there for each other. â€Å"Because (the Sage) has nothing to prove, people can trust his words†. The Sage and the parental figures of a family should have this in common. Parents have nothing to prove to their children and therefore children always believe what their parents tell them. Parents do not have to impress their children and can therefore set an example. If parents cannot have this connection with their children, there is a guarantee of failure in the family. â₠¬Å"In work, do what you enjoy†. Most people hate their job. If you like what you do, you can wake up every morning with a smile, looking forward to the day of work that lies ahead of you. At your job you should not try to hold all the power. By not trying to be powerful, you are truly powerful. Also, in you work you cannot chase after money. You must do your work because you like it, not because you want the money. If you chase after money â€Å"your heart will never unclench†. When you have no desire for the money, you are at peace. You must â€Å"be content with what you have, rejoice in the way things are†. You mustn’t expect too much because you will never get what you want. â€Å"When you realize there is nothing lacking, the whole world belongs to you†. â€Å"In governing, don’t try to control†. As a leader, it is best if the people hardly know that you exist. As a leader, you must not be bossy and try to have all the power becau se the people will hate you and will not obey you. You must lead, not control. By pointing people in the right direction you are helping them. By telling them where to go, you aren’t letting them think for themselves. The best leader listens to their people. As a leader you must govern with tolerance and you must not have high expectations of your people because you will never get what you expect. You must govern a country with moderation for the best results. If you have weapons, your people will be insecure. If you have laws, your people will break them. If you do not desire common good it will become as â€Å"common as grass†. If a nation does not get involved with the affairs of others, it will be well respected by all other nations. â€Å"If you over esteem great men, people become powerless. If you overvalue possessions, people begin to steal†. Society should not define things because bad things will happen. If you overvalue possessions it is obvious that people will steal them because they are worth something to society. If everything had none or equal value, no one would steal anything because nothing would be more important than everything else. This is an extreme suggestion however, it is the only way for society to come together as a whole and have no one steal from others. â€Å"Let the Tao become present in your life and you will become genuine. Let it be present in your family and your family will flourish. Let it be present in your country and your country will be an example to all countries in the world. Let it be present in the universe and the universe will sing.†
